It’s holiday month! Everywhere! Thanks to the lunar calendar & winter solstice for that. Today’s holiday destination spans quite a few countries – China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam for a start. It is Bodhi Day!
Learn: Today is a special day for Mahayana Buddhists worldwide as today, the 8th day of the 12th month, marks the day Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment. This day of enlightenment is commemorated worldwide by the “spreading of light” — lights on trees, candles, etc, for the next 30 days.
Fun Fact: Rather than a pine, or “Christmas” tree, Buddhists decorate a Ficus (fig) tree with lights & three ornaments representing Buddha, Dharma, and Shanga (the “three jewels” of Buddhism). “O Ficus Tree, O Ficus Tree…”
Activities: Charitable giving, stringing lights, meditation, filling houses with colorful decorations, and eating a meal of rice & milk.
